Have you ever really closely examined exactly what is in the cleaning products you use around the home? Do you wonder about what impact - if any - they have on your health, the indoor air quality and the environment? Not all cleaning products are made the same, and with people more and more concerned about the potential health effects from using certain products around the home, homeowners have increasingly begun to use "green" cleaning products. Green cleaning products don't just help promote a healthier overall household environment, but many are also less expensive than the name brand to boot.

We've dedicated this post to discussing what we believe to be the top five environmentally friendly home cleaning supplies on the market today. We've based this list on environmental impact, cost and, above all, their effectiveness.

Top 5 Eco-Friendly Cleaning Supplies

  1. Biokleen All-Purpose Cleaner: Just mix an ounce (or two ounces for heavily soiled areas) of this cleaner with a gallon of water and you've got a great all-purpose cleaner for floors, walls, countertops and bathrooms. Specifically, the cleaner is comprised of citrus and grapefruit seed extract, and it doesn't include any artificial ingredients. A small, 32-ounce bottle of Biokleen runs less than $7 and makes 32 gallons of cleaning solution.
  2. Bon Ami Powder Cleanser: For less than $2, you can own a high-powered kitchen and bathroom cleaning powder with lots of sustainability benefits. For starters, the powder is composed of biodegradable ingredients. It also contains baking soda to mask odors. But the Bon Ami Powder Cleaner itself isn't the only aspect of the product that's sustainable. The packaging is sustainable too. In fact, Bon Ami places a big emphasis on creating its packaging with recycled packaging, labels and adhesives.
  3. Ecos All-Purpose Everyday Cleaner: We've got another all-purpose cleaner on this list, this one from Ecos. Available in a 22-ounce spray bottle for less than $3, this cleaner contains plant-based ingredients and can literally be used on any surface in the home. We like the orange plus concentrated version, which leaves behind a great scent after cleaning is done.
  4. Seventh Generation Multi-Surface Disinfectant: Seventh Generation is a brand that's known for its eco-friendly products and sustainable packaging. Its disinfecting multi-surface cleaner is no exception. Not only will it kill a whooping 99.99 percent of germs and bacteria that exist on various household surfaces, but it also deodorizes. Its composition is all derived from natural ingredients and the spray bottle can be recycled at store drop-off locations via the How2Recycle program. You can pick up a 26-ounce solution of the product for less than $3.
  5. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda: Baking soda is a bit of a wonder in and of itself. Not only is it inexpensive, but it's only one ingredient - so you know exactly what you're buying and using when you clean. Beyond that, however, it can literally be used to clean and/or deodorize anything. Pots and pans, floors, grout, clothes - you name it, baking soda can probably do it. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is affordable, with a 16-ounce box running as low as 99 cents.

Final Thoughts

Taking steps to improve our environment even small steps add to the overall solution. Change starts with the individual and working small changes into our daily routines and home maintainence is a great starting point.
