One of my favorite times of the year is right around the corner, Independence Day! What's not to love, freedom, BBQ, pool parties, fireworks, and good times spent with loved ones. Like every year there are plenty of events, activities, parades, and concerts to attend.

Here are five of our favorite Independence Day events from around the greater Washington DC/Northern Virginia areas. Have a happy and save Fourth of July and Happy Birthday USA!

Ida Lee Park in Leesburg

Concert and fireworks in Ida Lee Park is a fantastic way to celebrate our countries birthday. Gate open promptly at 5:45pm with music starting at 6pm so get there early to enjoy the full set. Food courts will provide all of your favorite BBQ delights like burgers, hot dogs, and funnel cake. The true celebration will start around 9:30pm with one of largest fireworks shows in the region. For more information contact Lee Park Recreation Center at 703-777-1368

Vienna's Americana Celebration

Vienna's Fourth of July Celebration at Yeonas Park (1319 Ross Drive SW) is full of music, food, contests, and of course the fireworks show. Sign up for the hot dog or pie eating contest or simply enjoy the show. Doors open at 6:30pm with the contests slated to start at 7pm. Music will begin around 7:15pm and food will be served from the Vienna Little League concession stand. The evening will close with a bang at 9:30pm with a spectacular fireworks show. Fireworks Viewing Spots in Arlington

My favorite spot to view the main Fireworks show in DC is from Key Bridge overlooking the Potomac River. Between Georgetown and Rosslyn this spot gives you a perfect view of the amazing show over the National Mall.

My next favorite location is the Air Force Memorial in Pentagon City. From a large platform you can view the fireworks while taking in the Pentagon and Potomac River.

Alexandria Fireworks on July 8th

Alexandria is older than the USA by 27 years and with that they celebrate a few days later on the 8th at Oronoco Bay Park. This party is always a good time with music, food, birthday cake, and of course fireworks show over the Potomac River.

Washington DC National Mall Celebration

I've saved the best for last, the official fireworks show at the National Mall in Washington DC. This will be the most popular and thus most crowded location for your Independence Day festivities. The day starts with an annual Nationals game against the New York Mets followed by the Independence Day Parade at 11:45am. Later in the evening the Capitol Fourth Concert starts at 8pm including The Beach Boys, John Stamos and more. The evening is punctuated by a breathtaking fireworks show from the reflecting pool in the National Mall at 9:09pm. For a map and more information click here.

Final Thoughts

Have fun and please be save over the Independence Day Weekend. Remember to plan for large crowds, heat, and high calorie foods. (yum) For a more complete list of events and activites around the area click here. Happy Independence Day from Exterior Medics!
