Are you looking for a roofing company in Maryland? Before you make a decision about your new roof, you may want to consider which type of shingles you want. There are more than just traditional asphalt shingles, especially if you want your roof to be energy efficient and long lasting.

Asphalt: Affordable and Simple

Perhaps the most well-known type of roof is durable, affordable asphalt. Asphalt is lightweight, easy to install, and cheap. Not only is it on most homes, but it will last roughly 20 years—even if it's not as durable as other options, it's still relatively long-lasting. During hail storms, it will often bend rather than deform, but its energy efficiency isn't significant.

Wood: Attractive and Durable

Wood or shake roofs are attractive and rustic. They last longer than asphalt, with many wood roofs lasting up to 30 years. Certain types of shingles, such as cedar shingles, are naturally pest resistant.

Metal: Strong and Long-Lasting

Metal roofs can last up to 100 years, depending on the type of metal used. Aluminum or steel will last up to 50, while copper or zinc can last up to 100. They're heavy, however, which means your roof may need to be reinforced. Many people falsely believe metal roofs are loud. Today, there are sound-muffling layers that reduce sound transmission.

Tile: High Value and Attractive

Ceramic tile roofs can last a hundred years. They can be found in many different styles and colors, and they're often found in high end, historic, and luxury homes. The core issue with tile is that it's very heavy. Most properties are going to need their roofs reinforced in order to use ceramic tile. Ceramic tile has tremendous insulating properties.

Slate: Versatile and Long-Lived

Slate is one of the longest lasting roof options. Slate comes in both "soft slate" and "hard slate." Soft slate will last up to 125 years, while hard slate will last up to 200 years. Many call slate a "forever" roof because it will last so long. Slate is lightweight and easy to maintain. They're also very attractive, fire-resistant, and eco-friendly.

Clay: Waterproof and Distinct

Red clay tiles are found in many areas of the world, as they are long-lasting, waterproof, and attractive. These roof tiles are usually made out of terracotta clay, but like many other types of shingles, they are very heavy. Clay roofs are going to be expensive, but they can last up to 50 years. They may last longer if they are properly maintained and installed under the ideal conditions.

Copper: Expensive and Lightweight

Copper is expensive to install, but it can last up to 80 years. It has a distinctive appearance, and is often found in historic homes. Since it is lightweight, it doesn't require the additional reinforcement that many other types of shingle might. It is fire-resistant and can improve property value.

Solar: Energy-Efficient and New

Solar shingles are a new type of solar technology, in which solar panels are installed just like traditional shingles. The primary issue with this product is that it's new and expensive. Over time, it's likely to become more affordable. Solar shingles are presently very expensive to install and can be expensive to repair and maintain.

As you can see, there are a surprising amount of shingles available. While most people use asphalt, you have a lot of options, especially if you want something that's going to last a long time.
